Headed over to RSM during lunch today. I'm sure the guys at the local bait and tackle laugh at me for fishing such little ponds like RSM, Harveston, and Pond Park when there are good Bass lakes around (Skinner, DVL, Perris, etc...). Yeah, they're small, but it allows me to get some fishing in almost every day. I can head over to any one of those places during my lunch break or before starting work in the morning and get my line wet without having to carve 1/2 a day out of my schedule, or dump a pocket full of money for entrance fees and boat rentals.
So here's the little guy that I hooked today. (3pm, Pumpkin worm, T-rigged no weight)
Now, just because these lakes are small doesn't mean they only have small fish in 'em. Today we got to see first hand that there really are some nice Bass in RSM. During lunch James and I were fishing about 35 yards apart and all of a sudden the water errupted right between us right up against the edge. A large Bass had wedged itself into a crack in the wall. He spooked, but when he came back, James got a good look at him and estimated him to be between 5 - 6 pounds.
After work, I headed back there to see if I could get a bite. I was standing right over an area where there is some kind of drain or underwater vent that empties into the lake and I spooked a little 2 pounder. I cast my line out ahead of him hoping to get a reaction when another fish exploded out from that underwater vent. They must be bedding down in there because we've noticed a lot of them hanging around those vents. But this guy was bigger than any of those and I'd estimate he was at least 5 lbs.
So these lakes/ponds may be small, but given some time and patience (and perhaps a more active season) we may get to hook into one of those big guys.
On a more humorous note, as we were fishing the far end of the lake today we were seeing several 2 - 3 pounders. They were just hangin out about 5 - 8 feet off the bank. There was one that I was actively trying to catch off to the side of where I was standing. I would cast and retrieve my bait right through where he was, but I didn't want to get any closer (didn't want to spook him). As I was getting ready to cast out again, I looked directly in front of me about 6 feed out, and there was an LMB about 3 lbs just staring at me ... that's right, staring at me. Facing my direction with his head and body slightly turned so that his left eye was staring right at me. It was like he was just watching me saying, "What are you doing? Man! We've got your number, and we're not biting!" As I turned to cast out past him, he leisurely swam off, not spooked, but not stupid either.
