Tail end of the storm

Posted by Gene Saturday, January 23, 2010

Yesterday (Friday) I headed over to RSM during lunch. I was going to fish, but the clouds rolled in just as I got there, so I figured I'd just take a walk in the rain.

You know, usually when it starts to rain we get out our umbrellas, or put up the hoods on our rain coats, or break out the poncho to cover ourselves up. As it started to rain on the lake I didn't bother to cover my head right away and I noticed something I hadn't heard before. Rain drops hitting the lake. When our hoods are up or we have our umbrellas, the rain hitting it covers up the sounds of the rain hitting anything else. But without it, you can hear the rain hitting the water in the lake. It was almost like it was singing.

Rain drops hitting pavement makes kind of a "splat" sound, but when small, light rain drops are hitting a still lake it almost sounds more like a subtle chime. As the number of drops increases, you start to hear thousands of those little chimes at once. It also reminded me of what thousands of miniture crickets might sound like.

So the weather seemed to clear up as I was finishing work, so I headed back to the lake to see if I could get a little fishing in. But wouldn't you know it, again, just as I got there the clouds rolled in again and it started to rain. This time I fished a little bit anyway (no bites). I could see the end of the storm in the distance. It was interesting. The cloud came over and darkened everything so much that the lights around the lake all came on. But you see past the end of the cloud to the horizon where the sun had not set yet. It made for a pretty effect.

Under the cloud with clear horizon in the distance.

That storm was pretty cold and it took about 20 minutes with the heater on in the car for me to start feeling my fingers again.
